 End of Season Report 2006

All of Horsham's squash teams have completed their 2005/2006 season.  Horsham men's teams had one of their best season's  ever.  The 1st team was strengthened by Ollie Pett and Vince Lawrence playing at 1 and 3 this season and they certainly proved their worth, going undefeated throughout the season.  The team took the lead early in Sussex League Division 1 and never looked back, only losing 1 match all season.  James Norman, Rachel Willmott, Simon Keefe and Pip Johnson also contributed to the 1st team's title winning season, putting in match winning performances time and time again.  Next season will be a different ball game, as they go up into the Premier Division, where they will be playing the likes of England ranked players, Stacey Ross and Tim Vail.

The men's 2nd team topped the Sussex Division 3 West by a commanding 44 points.  The teams consisting of Nick Stafford, Roger Hainsworth, Stuart Catterall and Chris Mason, started the season poorly, losing the first match but bounced back strongly and went through the rest of the season undefeated.

The 3rd team, with Kevin Taylor, Chris Mason, Michael Holding, Martin Plews and Allan Edwards, playing in Sussex Division 4 West, had a very strong first half of the season, winning 5 out of 7 matches but the second half proved a different story, with only 2 wins and left them finishing in 3rd place.

Finally, the 4th team had a storming season, topping Division 6 West, winning 15 out of the 16 matches.  Alex Pett playing at no. 1 had an outstanding season, winning every match with only dropping 2 games out of the 54 he played.  The rest of the team, Peter Powell, Nigel Barnett, Les Lane and Ian Chance, kept the high standard set by Alex up by only losing 7 rubbers between them through the whole season.  Next season will be tough though, as the improved Alex Pett will be looking to play for the second team and leave the 4th's looking for a new number 1.

Horsham Ladies 2nd team ended their season with a good win against Dunnings Mill 3rd team, winning 4-1.  Trish Law won 3-1 having a blip in the second game, but won the other 3 games convincingly 9-4, 9-2, 9-1 to take the win.  Mandy Barnett (9-3, 9-1, 9-3), Jenny Brown (9-4, 9-1, 9-3) and Bryony Johnson (9-5, 9-6, 9-4) won convincingly 3-0 but Julie Stevens, although fighting hard against her awkward opponent, lost 3-0.

Horsham Ladies season ended with mixed results.  The 1st team struggled throughout the season, with many injuries and finally had to withdraw.  However, the 2nd team managed to stay at the top of the table for most of the season but unfortunately were toppled by Chichester 2nd team.  Lancing also pipped them by 1 point, putting them into the third spot.  The third team also struggling at times put up a good fight to come 6th of the 7 teams.
